On Tuesday the 13th May, 35 Year 10 students took part in the Maritime Zoom Workshop - Careers in Shipping. Employees from shipping companies, engineers, chief officers and operations managers gave presentations on their roles and the responsibilities and skills required to perform their jobs successfully. They also talked a little bit about their career path and the qualifications they required when they began their careers at entry level.

All the speakers were female, outlining the changing face of equality within this male dominated industry. All the speakers talked about their love of sailing and travelling the world. Two of the speakers talked about the apprenticeship route which they undertaken to get into their current positions within the maritime industry. One speaker talked about how in her role she worked at sea for 3 months and then had 3 months off to travel and relax. Many of the students seemed to take notice of this perk, which they had no idea existed within the working world.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions during the presentations about the salaries, promotional prospects and training courses provided for the various roles. Students asked about sexism within the workplace and whether they had experienced discrimination from men. Students were somewhat surprised to hear that most of the women had not experienced any discrimination within their current jobs.

Students were highly engaged and everyone of them now have a far greater understanding of various opportunities available to them within the maritime industry, both at sea and on land.
