Introduction

During our Key Stage 3 programme, students are taught the three traditional sciences as separate units with strong links to the GCSE curriculum. We aim to provide students with the necessary skills to handle the demands of the GCSE curriculum while fostering a love of learning and applying science to the real world. Lessons focus on practical investigations and skills, extended writing tasks, making models of natural phenomena and group tasks.

Beyond delivering the curriculum content, the teaching of these units is intended to develop students practical skills in working scientifically, numeracy skills in processing practical data and literacy skills through their quality of written communication in explaining key scientific ideas. Science students at The Warren School also benefit from new laboratories and state of the art interactive technology in every class room. Year 7 students complete an “induction” unit of study, introducing lab equipment, techniques and procedures to help facilitate the transition from Key Stage 2.

Student progress is continually monitored and rigorously assessed both summatively and formatively. These assessments help inform set changes throughout the year to ensure that are students are appropriately challenged and supported. The progress of our students is further driven by engaging homework and independent tasks.

At GCSE, students have the opportunity to study through a number of learning routes – Triple award separate sciences, Trilogy science (formally known as double award science) and a single science award in Chemistry studied over two years.

Students can progress to A’level courses through any one of these routes.

 Why study science:

When you study subjects like physics, chemistry and biology you get a more technical and in-depth understanding of the world you live in. they allow you to develop scientific knowledge and theory about everything in the world that you come across. Project like assignments force you to think of possible solutions that can happen within the context of this world and even beyond.

Science is always progressing towards more positive and remarkable developments. It has helped people find the cure to many diseases and has created infinite possibilities for people.

Science gives you a wide range of opportunities, from studying about each and every part of the human body, to animals, trees and the universe. You can study so many different things in general or specialise in one particular field with so much variety that it will never bore you.

 Future careers from studying science:

Pharmacist, astronomer, chemical engineer, materials science, medicine, environmental scientist, wildlife conservationist, forensic scientist and many more.

Extra Curricular

  • Weekly clubs – science club takes place every Thursday during lunch time. Students have the opportunity to work with sixth form students to perform interesting and unusual experiments.
  • Google classroom – every student has access to Google classroom which will be updated by teachers with homework and any useful information.
