Sports

Sport is at the heart of school life providing every student with the opportunity to fulfil their dreams, aspirations and need to have a physically active lifestyle.

Extensive grounds and facilities enable a wide variety of sports to be played with the opportunity to take part in many extra-curricular clubs available to all students.

The curriculum provides the students with the opportunity to develop their skills, understanding and interest in a host sporting experiences.

The department has eight highly qualified and enthusiastic physical education teachers ably supported by a number of specialist sports coaches from local professional clubs and national sporting governing bodies. This wealth of experience allows students to have the opportunities to compete at year, district, county, regional, and national level.

At the heart of our philosophy is the desire to provide each of our students with the opportunity to access high quality physical education in our warm and friendly community.

We firmly believe that learning extends beyond the classroom and everyone is encouraged to participate to develop their skills and also to understand the importance of an active healthy lifestyle and the value of working as part of a team.

Our vision is to offer a differentiated programme of movement and sport which ensures that all students:

  • develop skills to excel in a broad range of physical activities;
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time;
  • engage in competitive sports and activities;
  • understand the importance of personal health, fitness and safety and lead healthy, active lives;
  • foster a lifetime love of sport.

KS5

Students have the opportunity to take the following Advanced Level & BTEC National Sport Courses in the Warren 6th Form;

  • BTEC National Foundation Certificate in Sport (= 1 A Level)

These courses will enable students to study a variety of sport related degrees at university;

  • Degree in Sports Studies
  • Degree in Sports Science
  • Degree in Physical Education
  • Degree in Sports Coaching
  • Degree in Sports Management
  • Degree in Physiotherapy (When combined with science A Level)

BTEC National Foundation Certificate in Sport

Year on year the sport and active leisure sector outperforms the rest of the UK economy; this has been a trend since the end of the economic recession of the late 1990s, and researchers predict will continue to be the case for years to come.

The annual contribution of the sport sector to the UK economy is over £8 billion. This sector has more than 36,000 employers creating work for more than 600,000 full-time and part-time employees, and 5 million plus volunteers.

Sport and exercise scientists continue to be a growing presence in the world of sport, and as we look to the future; all the signs suggest that their influence in sport will increase.

From the elite performers’ reliance on a large support team, to the casual gym user’s use of ergogenic aids, sport and physical education core elements of anatomy, physiology, psychology and biomechanics are seen in almost every aspect of, and activity within, the sport and active leisure sector including education.

The aim of all our L3 sport and PE courses is to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding required to; either pursues a career in the sport and leisure industry post sixth form or to go onto to university to study PE and sport further.

BTEC National Sport

Extended Certificate in Sport – 4 Units = 1 A Levels

BTEC National in sport is designed to provide highly specialist work-related qualifications. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment or university.  They attract UCAS points that equate to similar-sized general qualifications such as A Levels. On successful completion of a BTEC National in Sport, a learner can progress to employment and/or continue their study in the same, or related vocational area at university.

Students will cover a number of different units, some compulsory and some optional. 3 of the 4 units are compulsory.

This qualification provides opportunities for learners to focus on the development of personal, learning and thinking skills, functional skills, and wider skills in a sporting context, such as environmental issues and health and safety considerations.
