Our year 8 boys Rugby team took part in an East London emerging rugby festival at Barking Rugby Club on Tuesday 17th December 2019. Organised by Keith Hughes, Barking Rugby Clubs community coach, the tournament included schools from Barking, Dagenham, Newham and Redbridge.
The aim of the tournament is to encourage boys to play rugby and offer them the opportunity to join their local Rugby club, Barking RFC.
These community links with our local sports clubs are vital if we are to engage young people in sport outside of school and to ensure young people become lifelong participants in sport. Barking Rugby Club have been the most engaging community club in this respect. For the past 4 years they have been proving opportunities for young people, both boys and girls, to engage with rugby in the local community.
The 15 boys representing Warren were an absolute credit to themselves and the school. They performed with courage and skill and won all six of their matches that they played including wins over Loxford, Riverside, Dagenham Park, Eastbrook, Sydney Russell and Kingsford. We had so many amazing performers on the day but Rio Ferguson-Cope was our star man. He made so many crucial tackles and prevented the opposition from mounting attacks.
The players and PE staff at the Warren School would like to pay tribute the work of Keith Hughes, Barking Rugby Club and all of the volunteers from Barking Rugby Club for putting on such an excellent tournament and I hope we can continue to work in partnership to get young people active and involved in local community sport.
