Welcome to Year 11

Year 11 Motto:

By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.
‘Benjamin Franklin’

Year 11 is one of the most exciting, challenging and important times in your child’s education. This year the students will continue in their journey to achieving GCSE and/or BTEC qualifications that will act as a passport to success for the rest of their lives.
This year your child will be taking exams and completing coursework and controlled assessments (course work completed in school under exam conditions), all of which will count towards their final GCSE grades.
The vision of the Year 11 team is to develop and create clear pathways for your child to succeed in their education. We do this by encouraging all students to aspire to be their best with the knowledge that they have the full support of the year team and their parents.
Over the coming months I would ask all parents/carers to make a conscious effort and look at some of the following ways to monitor your childs learning from home. This can be done in various ways such as:

  • Encourage your child to complete coursework on time
  • Check s/he is doing her homework and sign planner on a weekly basis
  • Make sure s/he is at school every day and on time
  • Ensure the balance of work and play is right
  • If your child is struggling in any way- let us know straight away by contacting Mr Tyrrell or Miss Symons
  • Encourage your child to attend all revision/intervention and study support sessions which will be held on a weekly basis in school.

The school will also facilitate extended opportunities to assist students in their effort to be their best. Extra-curricular activities including both lunchtime and afterschool clubs and sports will provide students with the chance to develop socially in areas outside of their academic subjects.

We believe as school that a positive relationship with home is essential if the students are to achieve their full potential. So if necessary I will be contacting you to discuss the academic progress of your child. The Year 11 team would also welcome contact from you, so please feel free to contact us. It is essential that all parties work together over the coming months to make sure that the students get the best qualifications they are capable of through their hard work in and out of lesson time.

Over the coming terms it is essential that students have outstanding attendance and punctuality and behaviour which will allow purposeful learning to take place. The year team will reward students for making excellent choices through rewards given out in weekly assemblies and will continue to put support systems in place for those that are finding the correct decisions difficult to make. We hope that our parents will continue their children to make the right decisions and to support the year team when the wrong choices have been made.

Students must also take ownership of their learning. They need to make effective use of their school diaries to record homework and to self-monitor their attendance and punctuality. Parents and tutors must support this endeavour by checking the diary on a weekly basis especially both the homework logs, detention page, and using it as a communication tool which links the efforts of home and school.
After school and during the school holidays there will be opportunities for your child to attend revision/intervention sessions leading up to their GCSE examinations which I believe will have a positive impact for the students in terms of the results that they will receive in August. Throughout the year we, as a school, will continue to push our students to achieve their full potential across all of their chosen curriculum areas/subjects. We will continue to push our students to make outstanding progress and urge our Year 11 students to continue to aim high.
Over the past years we have worked together and I would like to thank you for your continued support coming into your child’s final GCSE year. I am sure that you are also looking forward to an extremely successful GCSE examination year. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

The link below will give both parents and students tips on how students and parents can support each other over the coming year. Please feel free to use this at any stage. http://unstoppableteen.com/
