Our Year 12 Applied Science students recently took a trip to the National Bakery School which is part of London South Bank University. They were able to experience science applied to a very important industrial process in a professional and state of the art setting.
The students were given a lecture explaining some of the scientific concepts involved in food production in the morning, and discovered how this linked to their studies. In the afternoon they were invited into the university’s food science laboratories to carry out a practical task. They worked in groups to replicate a method used to create bread rolls. This involved them understanding the concepts they had learned about in school and had talked about on the morning of the event as well.
The students found the day to be very engaging and informative, and it has provided them with a lot of information that will be beneficial to them over the remainder of their course.
